Autumn’s Perfect Balance

On September 22nd at 8:43 a.m. we find the Outer Banks to be in perfect balance, with twelve hours of light and twelve hours of dark.  The Autumnal Equinox, akin to the Vernal Equinox of springtime, is always a season of happiness and gratitude for me.  With cooling temperatures, quieter beaches, and less crowded shops & restaurants, this is the season to fully reconnect with Nature and all she has to offer.

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald says, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” I think he’s right! The mercury settles down and our walks on the beach and through the woods become more comfortable. We crave to commune with the trees that look as if they’re covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon. Ocean temperatures remain sufficiently warm to enjoy the waves, and with beachgoers thinning, the pace balances to a beautiful blend of harmony and melody once again. It’s as if at the end of summer, the Outer Banks starts life anew but in a quieter, more measured manner. The seasons have grown up.

This time of year, along with the months of April & May, are referred to as “the shoulder season”. Visitors seeking value will be pleased to find rental prices substantially lower, and most homes available for shorter-term rentals. Long weekends are popular as are impromptu mid-week visits. The growing trend of destination weddings is also finding its way to the Outer Banks, and with significant availability and lower prices on vacation homes, newlyweds are finding it very easy to lower costs for themselves and their friends and family.

Here at Koselig Kove, we keep the pool heated and the hot tub bubbling. As such, cooler evenings are welcomed! The area nightlife is still active for those seeking shopping and dining out, and wait times at restaurants are almost unheard of. Of course, with the Kove’s huge kitchen and ample seating, why not just grocery shop for all the things you want and have a family & friends meal together in the comfort of your own surroundings!

Nature gives us gifts if we open ourselves to them. However and wherever you choose to spend your autumnal equinox, I hope you find inner peace and a beautiful balance in all things.
